Deliciously tender steak tips

My boys were begging for steak one night, and the only thing I had in the fridge was a sirloin. But I wanted to jazz it up into something special for them. So I kicked it up the flavor chart with garlic butter sauce!

Beef is fantastic comfort food, especially when paired with potatoes. Even better, steak tips are fast and economical. And you know what else? These guys make a crowd-pleasing appetizer.

Tender steak tips with green beans and mashed potatoes

What Are Steak Tips?

Steak tips are generally beef from the sirloin, but the round, flank, and tenderloin work too. The versatile beef cut is excellent for grilling, kabobs, tacos, or sauteed for a simple main dish. It isn’t as tender as tenderloin but absorbs marinade flavors well.

Recipe Ingredients

What you need to make this recipe
  1. Sirloin Steak – Sirloin is the typical cut for super tender steak tips. However, tenderloin and flank steak work.
  2. Creole Seasoning – The unique blend of flavor and heat is even better with homemade Creole seasoning, but store-bought works, too.
  3. Garlic Butter – Garlic and butter are a marriage made in heaven for flavorful fatty goodness.
  4. Soy and Worcestershire Sauce – Deepen the color and flavor of your garlic butter sauce and enjoy an extra burst of umami.
  5. Onions – Optional in this recipe, but their aromatic and slightly sweet taste improves everything.

How to Make Steak Tips

Cube the meat, season it, and sear it.
Add the sauce ingredients and final touch
  • Prep the Steak – Lightly salt the steak. Then season with Creole seasoning and pepper to taste. Set aside. (Photos 1-2)
  • Cook – Heat oil in a large cast-iron frying pan (mine is a 12-inch) or skillet over high heat. Place the steak tips in the pan in a single layer, and saute for 2-3 minutes until golden brown, then turn and cook for 1-2 minutes on the other side. (Photos 3-4)
  • Work in Batches – Depending on your pan’s size, you may need to work in batches. Overcrowding the pan will prevent the tips from browning nicely. Repeat with remaining steak tips if needed.
  • The Sauce – Make space in the pan, then add the butter and garlic and sauté for about 30 seconds. Add Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, and onions, and cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring to coat the meat in the sauce. (Photos 5-8)
  • Serve – Sprinkle with parsley and serve over mashed potatoes, rice, or steamed veggies. Enjoy!
Insanely delicious steak tips ready to serve

Recipe Variations

  1. Craving Mexican? Replace the Creole seasoning with taco seasoning for a Mexican-inspired food fiesta.
  2. For you curry lovers, some curry powder or sauce will give it an extra smokey flavor and heat.
  3. Add sliced red or green peppers or mushrooms to increase the nutrients and bold colors.
  4. Add a dash of wine at the end for depth of flavor. Yum!

Tips and Tricks

  1. Avoid overcrowding the meat in the pan to prevent it from browning. Ensure your pan is big enough to fit everything in one layer, or cook the steak tips in smaller batches.
  2. For even cooking all the way through, let the beef come to room temperature (approximately 20 minutes) before cooking.
  3. Heat your skillet to very hot before cooking the meat to keep it juicy and tender.

Make-Ahead Instructions

This dish cooks up in a jiffy, so little prep work is involved. But it is helpful to cut the meat beforehand, season it, and keep it in the fridge until it is ready to cook. It saves a few minutes when there are hungry tummies to fill!

Serving and Storage Instructions

This dish is best served hot off the stove! And leftovers store beautifully! They’ll keep in an airtight container in the fridge for three days and reheat quickly on the stovetop.

You can freeze cooked steak tips for two months in an airtight container. Just thaw and reheat on the stovetop when you need a quick meal.

FAQs

What other cuts of beef can you use?

Sirloin is my personal favorite, but I’ve found that ribeye and tenderloin also work well for this recipe.

How do you make steak tips tender?

Aside from choosing the correct cut of meat, it helps to slice the meat against the grain when cutting it into cubes. Letting the steak tips rest for a few minutes before eating also helps to seal in the juices.

Should you rinse the meat before cooking?

Most people will tell you it isn’t good to wash raw meat before cooking because it can spread bacteria. However, you never know what happened to it before you bought it. So I rinse it and then disinfect my workspace.

What to Serve With Steak Tips

For a classic comfort food meal, serve these Steak Tips over a pile of velvety Cream Cheese Mashed Potatoes or Roast Garlic Mashed Potatoes for those garlic fans out there! Then complete the meal with Honey Glazed Baby Carrots or Sauteed Brussel Sprouts for a quick and colorful side.
Steak Tips can also be served on a platter with toothpicks for a savory appetizer. Add some Bacon Wrapped Jalapeno Poppers and Cajun Baked Sweet Potato Fries for a fun game-day spread.

Holy moly, this was delicious. Made it exactly per the recipe- except for only searing the steak tips 2-3 mins because we like rate/med rare- and everybody went back for seconds. The only change I’ll make next time is to double the sauce and maybe not use salt since it’s heavily seasoned with Creole seasoning. Thanks foe a great recipe!

Everyone’s stove is different, and some get hotter than others. While you need high heat to sear the steak tips, you don’t want it so high they scorch.
But I am happy you try it and you like it
