Salisbury Steak – well-seasoned juicy ground beef patties bathed in a crazy delicious and easy mushroom onion gravy. This Salisbury steak recipe is a classic family-favorite for weeknight dinners and very economical,  too!

Salisbury Steak

This Salisbury Steak here has been one of our top favorite ground beef recipe. It’s budget-friendly, easy to prepare and loaded with flavors from the juicy beef patties to the mushroom onion gravy.

What is Salisbury steak?

Salisbury steak was said to be named after an American physician, James H. Salisbury. It is a popular dish in the U.S. that is often served with a brown gravy, mashed potatoes or pasta. The dish itself is made with homemade beef patties from a blend of ground beef, seasonings and other ingredients, then formed into patty forms and served with gravy made from scratch.

Salisbury Steak

What is the difference between a Salisbury steak and a hamburger steak?

These two are closely similar that it’s hard to tell them apart. We sort of use those terms interchangeably, however, the purists would claim that hamburger steak should only contain meat and seasonings with no fillers or binders like breadcrumbs unlike Salisbury steak which contains breadcrumbs, eggs and onions (just like this meatloaf here).

Well, I’ve seen a couple of Salisbury steak and hamburger steak recipes. They’d often say that hamburger steak are those beef in patty forms that can either be served on a bun or poured over with the gravy, while Salisbury steak is actually cooked in the gravy itself. But I guess, both tend to be the same thing if cooked with a gravy mixture.

How to make Salisbury steak gravy?

If you’re looking for a great family meal, then this Salisbury Steak dish fits the bill perfectly. Everything is cooked in a pan and it comes together in 40 minutes. The quality of the beef patties and the gravy itself are at par with those you’ll pay heftily at a restaurant. Even newbies can totally nail this one.

It starts with forming and cooking the patties first on both sides, followed by the softening of onions to yield extra flavor and making the easy mushroom gravy. After the sauce thickens, put back the cooked patties into the skillet, let it simmer for 8-10 minutes and that’s it. Easy, fancy and tasty dish in no time!

Salisbury Steak

Serve this tasty Salisbury Steak with these  mashed potatoes,  here or warm rice or cauliflower rice plus some veggies on the side asparagus or broccoli. Warm bread pairs well with this one, too, especially to dunk and mop that mushroom  onion gravy.

Enjoy!

I make this recipe all the time as written! Absolutely LOVE IT! Can I freeze this meal or at least the beef patties?

Thank you!!! I’m so glad you love it. And, yes, you can freeze it for three months. Since the gravy doesn’t have milk, it also freezes fine.

I just made this and it really turned out well! I made a couple of small modifications. My husband hates thyme, so I used basil, oregano and parsley flakes. I didn’t add water, just added more beef broth. I substituted dried onion for the two tablespoons of minced onion. I thought about dusting the patties with flour before adding them to the pan, but decided against it. It turned out fine. I served it with green peas and mashed potatoes with freshly grated Parmesan cheese. I’ll definitely make this again.

My children and grandkids love, love, love my version of Salisbury steak. Just form ground chuck patties, flour them on both sides and fry them. You then drain the fat on paper towels. There will be brown bits left in the pan. Do a very quick
rinse of the pan with hot water to remove some of the fat but you need those Brown bits! Mix together a can of cream of mushroom and a can of golden mushroom soup. Sprinkle in onion powder and thin the mixture with water. Put the patties in a baking dish and cover with the soup mixture. Bake, covered at 360 degrees for 30 minutes. Folks, it is awesome!

I saw this recipe on Facebook. I saved it, just to have a reference, I ended up using all the ingredients. I wasn’t expecting it to come out great, but it did! The creole seasoning gave it a tasty twist, I couldn’t stop eating it. Leftovers were just as good. Thank you!

I made this last night and it was absolutely amazing. My husband was bragging to his friends how delicious it was. We had enough leftovers for a second meal and it was just as good the second day.

This looks very tasty, and I’m on my way to the market for a few of the ingredients. Would panko breadcrumbs work instead of regular breadcrumbs?
